Three Terpenes That Relieve Anxiety

Cannabis is known to help patients in numerous ways. Whether someone has immense amounts of pain, trouble sleeping at night, extreme nausea, or a disease such as cancer, parkinsons, PTSD, or seizures; cannabis can help. Anxiety is one of the most common ailments that medical patients look for relief from. For those who don’t have anxiety, there are some strains that might cause an anxious reaction. Luckily, there are ways to help calm anxiety and nerves through the terpenes found in the cannabis. Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in plants that are characterized by distinct aromas & effects. Here are three terpenes that have anti-anxiety properties.

Caryophyllene

In many cases Caryophyllene is the number one choice for relieving anxiety. This terpene is also found in hops, black pepper, cloves, & thai basil. If you are ever too anxious from smoking and you chew on Black Peppercorn you will feel an instant reduction of anxiety and your nerves will start to calm down. This is because the Caryophyllene is the only terpene that can act as a cannabinoid. It travels straight to your endocannabinoid receptors and can help ease anxiety almost immediately.

Some strains to look for that have high amounts of Caryophyllene include:

Limonene

Another important terpene that helps alleviate anxiety is Limonene. This terpene is a mood booster. It is very uplifting and cheerful. Cannabis typically has a “giggle” stereotype associated with it and that has a lot to do with the strains that have a high amount of Limonene. It’ll have you laughing at the smallest things and helps add a little bliss to the world. Limonene can also be found in citrus such as lemons, oranges, and limes. Not only can it help ease anxiety but it is also an antidepressant & helps with gastrointestinal issues. This magic terpene is one that most patients prefer to have in their cannabis because it truly helps to bring joy and happiness to those who enjoy it.

However, it is important to be cautious when smoking strains with Limonene. While it pairs well with other terpenes such as Caryophylene, Linalool, & Humulene, it can actually increase anxiety when paired with a heavy amount of Pinene. This is because both of those terpenes have a bit of a racey feel to them. When paired together it can cause an increase in your heart rate and could inflict some paranoia.

Some strains to look for that have high amounts of Limonene include:

Linalool

Lastly, a favorite terpene of mine, Linalool. This terpene is like heaven in a strain, it brings the body to a completely calm and relaxed state. Linalool can also be found in Lavender which just goes to show how relaxing and blissful this terpene is. It has anti-anxiety, anti-convulsive, and antidepressant attributes. Linalool is also widely known for its sedative attributes. If you are someone who has trouble sleeping because your mind is going 100 miles a minute, consider trying some strains with Linalool to help quiet the mind. With this terpene you are almost guaranteed to have an anxiety free high with a very relaxed mind.

Some strains to look for that have high amounts of Linalool include:

  • Lavender Jones

  • Zkittles

  • Scooby Snacks
